Ingredients

  • 24 ounces frozen Tater Tots
  • 1 tablespoon butter salted or unsalted, as preferred
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely diced about 1 cup
  • 2 cans condensed cream of mushroom soup 14-ounce
  • 2 pounds ground beef choose your preferred fat ratio
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder adds warmth and savoriness
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt plus more as needed
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce adds umami and depth
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper or to taste
  • 16 ounces mixed vegetables, frozen or canned such as corn, peas, green beans, and carrots

Method

Step 1: Brown the Ground Beef
  1. Start by heating a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Make sure to break it up into small pieces with a spatula. The goal is to get that nice brown color for flavor development. Once cooked, drain excess grease.
Step 2: Sauté the Onion
  1. In the same skillet, add the tablespoon of butter and let it melt. Toss in the finely diced yellow onion and sauté until it becomes translucent. This usually takes about 3–5 minutes. This step deepens the flavors.
Step 3: Combine the Ingredients
  1. In a large bowl, add the browned beef and sautéed onions. Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, mixed vegetables, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined. The mixture should be thick and hearty.
Step 4: Assemble the Hotdish
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread the beef mixture into a greased casserole dish, smoothing it into an even layer. Now it’s time for the pièce de résistance: the tater tots! Arrange them in a single layer on top of the beef mixture, covering it completely.
Step 5: Bake to Perfection
  1. Slide the casserole dish into the preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy. The bubbling edges will be a comforting sight, signaling that you’re on the right track.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
  1. Once out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes. This dish is best enjoyed warm, but leftovers are just as tasty. Scoop out portions and savor the delightful blend of flavors.

Notes

  • Here are some handy tips to elevate your hotdish game:
  • Use Frozen Veggies: This saves prep time and ensures they are consistently cooked. Just toss them in frozen!
  • Cheese It Up: Add a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top before baking for an added layer of flavor.
  • Spice it Up: Feel free to add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for some heat if that’s your style.
  • Make it Ahead: Prepare it a day in advance. Just cover the dish in the fridge, then pop it in the oven when you’re ready.
  • Store Leftovers Properly: Make sure to keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. They'll last about three to four days.
